With around 235,000 members, the production union (Gewerkschaft PRO-GE) is the largest workers&#8217; union within the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions (ÖGB) and the third largest of seven trade unions. It negotiates collective bargaining and wage agreements for about half a million people, mainly in manufacturing companies in industry and trade. PRO-GE&#8217;s sectors include chemicals, paper, glass, petroleum, agriculture, temporary employment, clothing, mining, electrical and electronics, oil and gas production, electricity supply, luxury goods, leather, metal industry, metal trades, food and textiles.

Austria's largest anime and manga convention

The European Geosciences Union (EGU) has been meeting at the Austria Center Vienna since 2005, and more than 10,000 international geoscientists are currently in the Austrian capital for the organisation’s annual General Assembly. Thanks to the successful partnership between the organizer and the venue, the contract has now been extended for another five years – from 2026 to 2030. In addition to its economic significance, this is also good news for the city as a science hub: global issues such as climate change and resource conservation will continue to be the subject of high-profile discussion in Vienna.

<p>“We are delighted that the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union will continue to be held at the Austria Center Vienna until 2030. It is our second-largest event and a special highlight each year, because no other scientific congress has such a young and dynamic participant demographic as the EGU,&#8221; said Austria Center Vienna Director Susanne Baumann-Söllner.</p>
<p>“The extension of the contract between the European Geosciences Union and the Austria Center Vienna is a strong signal for Meeting Destination Vienna. The city once again stands out in international competition and strengthens its position as an important research and science location. Longstanding partnerships like the one with the EGU are something we are proud of, as they reflect the organisers&#8217; confidence in the destination. We thank the EGU for their trust and the further cooperation until 2030 and congratulate the Austria Center Vienna on this success,” added Christian Woronka, Director Vienna Convention Bureau (VCB) and B2B Management at the Vienna Tourist Board.</p>
<h2>Vienna on track for full recovery as congress location</h2>
<p>Congress participants spend around twice as much money as the average visitor to Vienna, and the negative impact of their absence made itself felt on the hotel, F&amp;B and tourism industries during the coronavirus pandemic, when only a handful of in-person events could be held. “It is also thanks to our successful partnership with the Vienna Tourist Board and its Vienna Convention Bureau that we are well placed to close in on the booking levels seen in 2019. In 2023, the Austria Center Vienna will host around 20 congresses – six of them with more than 4,000 participants each.” Baumann-Söllner confirmed.</p>
<h2>About the EGU</h2>
<p>Founded in 2002, the European Geosciences Union (EGU) is an interdisciplinary society for scientists working and researching in the geosciences and related fields. This year, the important role of the oceans in the fight against climate change will be among its key focuses. The first General Assembly took place in Nice in 2004, and the annual gathering has been held continuously at the Austria Center Vienna since 2005.</p>

Hosted at the Austria Center Vienna, the ECR showcased some of the latest trends for the first time and provided a glimpse of what’s round the corner for congresses.

<p>“This year, the European Congress of Radiology revealed a new dimension showing how congresses can be hosted going forward: sustainably, digitally and as unique festivals for participants. Together with the European Society of Radiology we extended an invitation to event organisers to join us in a discussion of the future direction of congresses and the needs of the industry,” explained Susanne Baumann-Söllner, Managing Director of the Austria Center Vienna.</p>
<h2>Closer networking between industry and science</h2>
<p>Peter Baierl of the European Society of Radiology (ESR) presented his blueprint for closer interaction between representatives of industry and science, coupled with networking areas. To promote this, he proposes setting aside entire areas next to the lecture theatres to ensure industry is closely integrated into proceedings. As a result, the ECR is moving away from large halls with one booth after the other, towards exclusive experiential branding worlds focusing on the participant experience and where the product itself takes centre stage. The Austria Center Vienna offers the ideal event design options to meet this need thanks to the combination of halls and foyers with catering stations and adjoining terraces.</p>

<h2>Cinema production starring professors</h2>
<p>Responses to digitalisation at congresses were also on the agenda. “As we do not make a distinction between in-person and virtual participants in practical terms – or in the congress tickets – we offer everyone an emotional experience that can be compared to a cinema production. We use digital stage settings, camera jibs and teleprompters, always working with the highest degree of professionalism, and the same applies for our podium discussions. Our stars are the professors who share their knowledge. Based on their specific needs, participants can decide whether they want to experience the show, so to speak, live as part of the audience, in the cinema or on television,” Baierl explained, outlining his approach to hybrid congresses. After the shift to online congresses due to the pandemic, many organisers and their participants are longing for a return to in-person events. Lots of organisers are voicing the need for greater flexibility as well as the support of all partners to help make the transition to hybrid congresses. The Austria Center Vienna was quick to respond to these requirements, last year launching three hybrid formats – the Hybrid Circle, Hybrid Sphere and Hybrid Cube – for organisers to choose from and customise. In addition, it has a dedicated partner which specialises in attractive stage settings and productions to be shown on the 144m² of LED displays and 200 indoor and outdoor screens.</p>
<h2>Bringing the outside in</h2>
<p>Rather than exclusively taking place indoors, events are increasingly incorporating outdoor elements, too. The pandemic gave the idea of “outside is the new inside” a turbo boost, as more and more congresses are now being held during the warmer summer season. The Austria Center Vienna and the ECR are also making every effort to live up to the needs of participants in this regard, and are together setting new standards with a fresh configuration for Hall X5 which combines both indoor and outdoor elements. “We reconfigured the flexible exhibition on the square outside the main entrance, repurposing it as a cool and appealing registration, bar and networking area. People arrive and immediately feel at home. The direct line of sight to the entrance hall aids orientation, too,” Baierl confirmed. Participants can either network on the main square in semi-outdoor zones or fully outdoors in the fresh air. The green terraces and exterior spaces that the Austria Center Vienna has set up over the past two years are great for evening events and sundowner parties against the impressive backdrop of the Donaucity skyline.</p>

<h2>Sharing equipment and facilities: synergies between congress organisers</h2>
<p>Approaching the vision of the “congress of the future“ from the broadest possible angle, discussions with congress organisers also gave rise to the notion of looking beyond their own congresses with a view to identifying ways of sharing infrastructure. The ECR has been a certified green event for years – in line with strict sustainability criteria it goes without single use items such as rugs, posters and give aways. The Austria Center Vienna – the nation’s first Green Conference Centre – is ideal for green events, including in terms of regional catering, digital branding and getting to and from the venue by public transport. In future, these synergies could be taken a step further while new ones are unlocked between different congress organisers. “We have committed ourselves to the goal of bringing about a marked increase in the number of green events over the coming years. As part of this, we would like to act as an interface between congresses that take place one after the other. Ideally, certain congress furnishings and exhibitions set-ups could be used for multiple congresses in succession. This helps cut time-consuming build-ups and breakdowns while reducing power consumption, waste and costs,” Baumann-Söllner concluded.</p>

The recently published 2021 ICCA Ranking saw congress destination Vienna reclaim top spot worldwide for the first time since 2012. With 15 international events in 2021, Austria’s largest congress centre made a decisive contribution to the city’s strong showing. And this year, the upward trend is even more pronounced: in addition to numerous smaller-scale and medium-sized events, nine large-scale events each attracting more than 2,000 participants will take place at the Austria Center Vienna in 2022.

<p>At the end of May 2022, the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) published its 2021 ICCA Ranking – Destination Performance Index (DPI) report. Congress destination Vienna was awarded first place in the overall ranking, ahead of Lisbon and Athens. The survey attributed 92 congresses to Vienna, nine of which were held without restrictions, 22 as hybrid events and 61 virtually (113 congresses were originally planned). Second and third spots went to Lisbon (91 congresses held during the year) and Athens (66). The remainder of the top ten was made up of Barcelona, Singapore, Madrid, Prague, Paris, Berlin and Brussels. “2021 was an extremely challenging year for the entire congress industry. So it is all the more gratifying that Vienna emerged as the international market leader. Alongside all of the other stakeholders in the congress destination, we are working to ensure that Vienna continues to reaffirm its position as the top location for congresses over the years to come,” said Susanne Baumann-Söllner, Managing Director of the Austria Center Vienna. The City of Vienna had a significant role to play in the destination’s strong performance through the Vienna Meeting Fund. Launched in 2021, it provides financial support for both in-person get-togethers and hybrid events.</p>
<h2>Large-scale political gatherings at the Austria Center Vienna in 2021</h2>
<p>In 2021, 31 events – 15 of which attracted international participants – took place at the Austria Center Vienna. Due to the pandemic, some of these were conducted as hybrid or digital events. In the autumn, the venue welcomed back events with more than 1,000 participants for the first time. One of the highlights came in September with the IPU World Conference, which attracted parliamentary speakers and presidents from more than 100 nations. The conference, which was one of the largest political gatherings in Europe over the past 18 months, called for extensive additional security measures at the venue and in the surrounding area. Other events included the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) World Congress, the Börsetag private investor conference and the introductory lectures of the Vienna University of Business and Economics (WU).</p>
<h2>Successful start for congresses in 2022</h2>
<p>In 2022, the Austria Center Vienna will host nine large-scale congresses with more than 2,000 delegates each. Events such as the Baukongress and the Austrian Tourism Days got the year off to a successful start for the venue. The General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) brought more than 7,000 participants to the venue at the end of May – with a similar number following proceedings online. Next up are the European Society of Human Genetics (ESHG) Conference and the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Congress in June, and the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) in July 2022. Additional highlights this year include the Annual Meeting of the International Continence Society (ICS) and the Society for Arthroscopy and Joint-Surgery (AGA) Congress in September, with the Annual Meeting of the German Society for Hematology and Medical Oncology (DGHO) and European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) scheduled for October.</p>

The Austria Center Vienna has won a pair of Gold Stevie® Awards, taking first place in the Covid-19-related Communications or PR Campaign of the Year sub-category for the testing and vaccination lanes operated on behalf of the City of Vienna, while the Hybrid Circle was named Brand Experience of the Year. The winners will receive their awards at an online ceremony on 24 May.

<h3>Gold for communications campaign for Covid-19 testing and vaccination lanes</h3>
<p>The Austria Center Vienna set up Europe’s first Covid-19 testing lane in September 2020. Originally intended as a safety measure for large-scale events, the facility at the venue grew to become Austria’s largest testing and vaccination centre. In contrast to its core business of staging large-scale international events, in this mega-project the Austria Center Vienna focused on communications aimed at a target group that it traditionally has had little contact with: the residents of Vienna. A clearly defined communications strategy was devised in consultation with the client, the City of Vienna, and implemented in partnership with the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund Vienna. A comprehensive package of communication measures was put together, ranging from initial information posted on the Austria Center Vienna website, clear signage and guidance systems on site, support for media events and proactive communication on social media, through to assistance for the City of Vienna complaints management unit provided by the Austria Center Vienna’s in-house ombudsman service.</p>
<h3>Best practice: major players join forces to create exemplary solution</h3>
<p>Above all, the panel of judges singled out the impressive joint solution developed by several major organisations to ensure the smooth provision of tests and vaccinations to the people of Vienna, calling it “exemplary” and “a masterstroke”. According to one judge, it was “an outstanding feat of logistics and communications, something which we would have liked to have seen more of in Germany”. In addition, the strategic approach featuring an entertainment element was seen as a “refreshingly positive emotional USP for such a serious topic”. Another panel member highlighted the imaginative nature of the campaign: “the great effort involved in bringing all the different aspects to life is what makes this initiative unmistakeable and exemplary”. The campaign’s success is reflected in the figures: over 3.6 million visitors to the testing and vaccination facility, 5 million-plus website visits, thousands of branding and orientation signs, tens of thousands of positive reviews on social media, hundreds of press events and more than 4,000 reports in the media. “Achieving the highest possible vaccination rate in a city of two million people calls for the very best logistics and communications solutions. At the City of Vienna’s Public Health Services department, we’re delighted that our cooperation with the Austria Center Vienna was such a great success. At the Austria Center Vienna we reached out to millions of people using various forms of communication. This played a decisive part in enabling the capital to stem the spread of the coronavirus so effectively,” commented Jochen Haidvogel, head of the City of Vienna’s Public Health Services department (Municipal Department 15). “We’re proud to have supported the City of Vienna on such a vital task and made a crucial contribution to fighting the pandemic,” Baumann-Söllner added.</p>

<h3>Best brand experience of the year: Hybrid Circle</h3>
<p>Hybrid event formats have been in the ascendency for a number of years now, with the coronavirus pandemic elevating the trend to the new industry standard. “We took the frequent criticism about the discernible separation between on-site and online participants very seriously, and developed the Hybrid Circle in cooperation with our partners Media Apparat, Flave and AV-Professional. It’s a new format that moves us away from lecture-style keynotes in favour of real discussion, so it combines the best of both worlds,” Baumann-Söllner explained. A 360° set-up with several cameras and ultra-large screens creates a unique experience for all participants, both at the venue and online. “The Hybrid Circle shows how we can rethink conventional event formats and combine them with hybrid elements to not only overcome geographical barriers, but also to usher in a new era in event production,” said Andreas Göltl, Managing Director of Media Apparat. In September 2021, the Austria Center Vienna invited a panel of experts to a hybrid event designed to give customers an insight into the new hybrid concept.</p>
<h3>Judges impressed by innovative new format</h3>
<p>The judges praised the Hybrid Circle, calling it an attractive and integrative format which will definitely have a place in events long after the pandemic. The panel also cited the “first-rate implementation of the hybrid concept and genuine added value compared to pure in-person events”, as well as “the future-proof nature of the new format”. “It’s important to us that the Hybrid Circle is easily scalable. This makes it a meaningful addition to both large-scale conferences and exclusive discussion formats with fewer participants. These plaudits will spur us on to develop even more hybrid formats tailored to the needs of our customers,” Baumann-Söllner noted.</p>
