Attracting more than 20,000 international participants each March, the annual ECR is one of the largest medical conferences on the planet. The Austria Center Vienna will continue to host the ECR despite growing international competition, having just extended the contract for a further five years to 2025. According to the latest IHS study, this extension will contribute more than EUR 85 million to the Viennese economy.

The Austria Center Vienna provides the setting for numerous large-scale conferences – in 2018 alone, the venue will host 18 such events, as well as countless other gatherings. However, the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) is still something very special for the nation’s leading congress centre, as Managing Director Susanne Baumann-Söllner explains: “The ECR has been with us from the outset, growing from year to year. Today it is one of the largest and most important medical congresses anywhere in the world. We are delighted – and proud – that we will extend this successful partnership in future. And given the fact that other big-name conference destinations such as Barcelona worked very hard to attract the ECR, this extension sends out a particularly positive message about Vienna’s standing as a location for business and research!”

Radiology congress secures more than 500 jobs
The latest study published by the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS) confirms the importance of the conference industry for the Viennese and national economy. Each year the ECR brings around 20,000 participants from all over Europe to the Austrian capital, something which has a clearly measurable, positive impact on tourism, hospitality and infrastructure. In Vienna alone, this translates into gross economic impact of EUR 17.13m a year or more than EUR 85m across the five-year term of the new contract. For Austria as a whole, this figure rises to EUR 27.66m a year or EUR 138m over the next five years. In terms of employment and person years, these values equate to around 330 jobs created for the capital, or 509 nationwide by the ECR.

Austria Center Vienna to unveil its modernisation plans in 2018
2018 will be a special year for the Austria Center, and not just due to the expected visitor records:  remodelling plans will be presented for the 30-year-old building in spring. Managing Director Susanne Baumann-Söllner: “We are working hard on a concept that will open up completely new ways for our event organisers to use the space while making the spaces around the venue more attractive for the general public. For major international congresses such as the ECR, this is an additional argument in favour of staying in Vienna!”

Internationales Amtssitz- und Konferenzzentrum Wien, Aktiengesellschaft (IAKW-AG) is responsible for maintaining the Vienna International Centre (VIC) and operating the Austria Center Vienna.
